Griffiss Utility Services Corporation (GUSC) is a utility located in Rome, New York. It provides steam and electricity to the businesses in the Griffiss Business & Technology Park. As electricity prices crept upwards, GUSC was looking for a way to achieve savings for its customers and meet its renewable energy goals.
ANTARES was brought on to help GUSC develop a biomass CHP project. ANTARES helped the client choose a configuration that balanced economic risk, technical performance, and energy savings for the park tenants. The chosen configuration employs a commercial biomass boiler which will provide steam to generate electricity with a backpressure steam turbine and provide process heat for steam loop customers.
ANTARES completed a feasibility study for a wide variety of options and pursued vendor bids for construction and commissioning. The technical assistance included modeling the existing steam plant and distribution system for the park.
In addition to the technical modeling, ANTARES served the client by determining the biomass resource surrounding the facility and helped secure the necessary supply. With ANTARES assistance, the project was able to secure more than 40% of the project’s total capital requirement from federal and state government sources.
The project broke ground in August 2012. The local news video below shows the groundbreaking ceremony.
The project officially began operations in September 2013. Here is a news article marking the event.
